A crown is one of the best ways to restore a tooth that’s damaged, decayed, or unsightly, and with a CEREC® same-day crown at Gaston and Murrell Family Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee, your appointment won’t take more than a couple of hours. To learn more about the benefits of a same-day crown, schedule a visit with Nathan Murrell, DMD, by phone or online at the state-of-the-art clinic.
A crown, also referred to as a cap, is a protective covering that covers your entire tooth above the gumline. It’s built from an impression of your tooth and is designed to feel and function just like the natural tooth it’s restoring.
Dentists use crowns to treat several conditions, including:
If you ever need a root canal, your dentist will likely suggest fitting you with a crown after your procedure. A root canal can leave your tooth weaker and structurally compromised. A crown provides extra strength and protection.
If you have a tooth that’s missing entirely, you can also use a crown along with a dental implant to replace your missing tooth.
A traditional crown is made at an off-site lab, which has several disadvantages. First, it typically takes the lab a couple of weeks to make the crown, during which time you have to wear an uncomfortable and unsightly temporary crown.
Secondly, because your crown won’t be ready during your first appointment, you have to come back to your dentist’s office for a second visit to have it bonded in place.
CEREC® same-day crowns, like the ones Gaston and Murrell Family Dentistry provides, are made in the office during your initial appointment.
By utilizing advanced technology to increase accuracy and efficiency, same-day crowns make it so that you don’t have to wear a temporary crown and you don’t have to come back for a second visit.
First, your dentist prepares your mouth for the crown by shaving some enamel from your tooth.
Next, your provider uses an intraoral camera to take an accurate digital impression of your smile, and that impression is sent to a computer utilizing CAD/CAM technology.
This technology creates the virtual model of your crown, which is then sent to an in-house milling machine that carves your crown from a small ceramic block.
As soon as the milling process has finished making your crown, your dentist bonds it to your tooth. The whole process usually takes less than two hours and leaves you with a beautifully restored smile.
